Pain

Pain is a Major Problem

In this country alone, pain medications, surgeries and other treatments cost $4 billion a year. More than 70 million Americans suffer from back pain; nearly 40 million are tortured by arthritis; and more than 20 million people struggle with the agony of migraine headaches. Many alternative medicine professional's protocol for pain management is to eradicate the underlying cause of chronic pain . and we agree. All pain, whether chronic or acute, physical or emotional, is recognized, interpreted and acted upon by the brain.

Practically every medicine chest in the country has at least one non-prescription drug for pain purchased over the counter in a drugstore or supermarket. They are commonly taken without much regard for their possible side effects. But every medicine has potential side effects, which can appear even if you take it only once. Even those that don't cause an immediate reaction can slowly but surely harm the body if taken over a long time, or if mixed with the wrong medicines. This newsletter will address the herbal solutions and external ointment remedies for pain treatment and hopefully for elimination.

Ashwaganda

Ashwaganda has been used for many years to treat pain in Ayurvedic medicine. One to two cups of tea made from Ashwaganda have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. 16-ounce powder is available or order the liquid herbal extract.

The long-appreciated and tested herbal experience of India gives us this ginseng-like remedy for improved sexual function, abundant energy, increased ability of concentration and lung problems. Ashwagandha is especially valued in conditions of long-standing stress from chronic disorders.

It is adaptogenic and strengthens the body's power of resistance. It builds immunity. Useful for arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, cancer, candida, fever, inflammation, nausea and rheumatism.

Melatonin Mel.-W

Say goodbye to synthetic Melatonin! Say hello to the formula that feeds the pineal gland what it needs (Melatonin precursors) to make natural Melatonin and assure its production.

Contents: Alfalfa, Parsley, Chamomile, Gotu Kola, Barberry, Black Walnut, Bee Pollen and Maca.

This hormone is a potential therapy for treatment of diseases with pain and abnormal immune responses. The effects and mechanisms of melatonin on inflammation and immuno-regulation have been studied systematically. Melatonin showed significant analgesic effects in animal studies. It was also shown to enhance the pain-suppressing effects of analgesics.

Further studies showed that melatonin could enhance the functions of T and B lymphocytes and macrophages in vitro and in assisting arthritis treatment. These factors suggest that melatonin possesses marked anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory, and analgesic effects that may be related to the system of opiate modulation. Use melatonin cautiously when treating autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Some scientists speculate that melatonin could worsen the severity of autoimmune diseases.

Formula #4

This is the same as Big Five Extract, except that it does not contain the herb, Rue.

COMBINATION: Herbal Adjustment (Brochure 050300), Ol' #11, Arnica, B.&N.C.-W

This is a highly-effective team for external application to the spine and neck. For best results, apply either Oil of Cajeput (Brochure 040400) or Peppermint Oil to the spine and neck and then Formula #4. Formula #4 can also be carefully applied to the temples and forehead and other areas of distress. This formula relaxes cramping and relieves many kinds of pain, including headache, removes trauma (physical shock) to the nervous system and nourishes the voluntary and involuntary nervous systems.

Rue is an excellent herb for the repair of sore and damaged muscles and joints. However, Rue has also been used to bring on the menstrual period, if it is suppressed. To avoid any possible complications in case of pregnancy, Rue has been excluded from Formula #4.

Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory and anti-pain effects. It has long been used to prevent and relieve migraine headaches. A versatile substance, ginger has also been used to treat headache, nausea and vomiting. It is thought to have antioxidant and anti-depressant properties as well. It is a stimulant, dispeptic (settles upset stomach), diaphoretic (promotes elimination by sweating), diuretic (water retention), carminative (dispels gas), digestaid. For the woman, ginger increases circulatory flow to the reproductive organs, carrying warmth and removing obstructions. If flow of milk is too scant and the baby demands feeding every two hours, rest can be afforded by enriching the milk flow by mother taking ginger. Russian experience reports great relief with Ginger in the maladies of migraine, alcohol and lymphatic problems, as well as heart troubles, heart palpitations and lack of stamina in children.

Feverfew

This herb sprang into prominence in the late 1970's when newspapers in England carried reports of a woman whose headaches were cured by the herb. That anecdotal report was backed up by an article in a 1985 issue of the British Medical Journal, that described how eating feverfew leaves daily led to fewer and less severe migraine headaches in 70% of 270 cases. It is thought that feverfew counteracts headaches by inhibiting production of inflammation-causing substances in the body, and by helping to keep blood vessels supplying the head from being "squeezed down" on by vasoconstrictors. This miniature chrysanthemum has been used for beauty and relief of suffering since the dawn of humanity.

When the Romans invaded Great Britain, they took Feverfew with them and planted it there and used it for ready relief of sore joints and migraine headaches. And there it grows to this very day. Indeed, the skin, nervous system, reproductive and urinary organs are stimulated to discharge their poisons. In the process, relief is gained for nerves and from pressure on the brain, as well as tension from over-excitement. Feverfew reduces fevers by inducing sweating. Used in this way, the person is kept warmly wrapped so they can "sweat it out". Poisons are eliminated through the skin. Parkinson's Disease or its older name "Saint Vitus Dance" also responds to Feverfew. All manner of digestive disturbances, such as colic (stomach and intestinal gas pains) are handled. Alcoholic delirium and loquacity (running off at the mouth or motor mouth) are remedied by Feverfew. Inflammation in the lungs, abdomen and stomach are a specialty of Feverfew.

Feverfew contains a rich supply of the Vitamin B known as Niacin which can produce a beneficial "purple tingly blush" as it improves peripheral (blood vessels near the skin) circulation. All of this, and the beauty of Feverfew are for you.

Meadowsweet

Pain reliever. Natural "aspirin". This plant was studied by German chemists to derive its acetyl-salicylic-acid (the chemical compound we call aspirin today) for study so it could be produced cheaply and synthetically from coal tar. Then they did just that. They kept part of Meadowsweet's Latin plant name, Spiraea ulmaria to create the drug name "a-spirea-in" or aspirin.

The problem is, as with any synthetic, there can be side effects which can harm the body. In this case, internal hemorrhage is one common result. It is estimated that cheap, readily available chemical aspirin causes several thousand deaths world wide each year.

This does not count any of the possible harmful drug interactions with other medications. There are no accurate records kept. If there were, general concern alone would probably cause it to be withdrawn from the market. With natural "aspirin" you don't have to fear internal hemorrhage, as it has not been separated from its naturally occurring compounds, also found in the plant, which regulate its activity. Used to relieve pain and many other complaints such as: colic (abdominal gas pains), respiratory problems, gout, arthritis, water retention, rheumatism (sore joints), reducing fever, correcting painful urination.
