Depression

Something To Worry About

“Depressed individuals,” says Dr. Jerry Suls, Ph.D, may, in fact, “be characterized by the inability to discriminate between controllable and uncontrollable situations, feeling helpless (i.e., they are not responsible for their fate) while simultaneously feeling guilty (I.e., they are responsible for their fate).” This pinch, Dr. Suls notes, could be viewed “as exacerbating and perhaps even creating the depressive state.” Clinical psychologist and stress management consultant Dennis T. Jaffe, Ph.D., agrees. The people who automatically assume that their efforts won’t make the difference, and so won’t act even when the situation is within their power to change, come to feel helpless, victimized, and depressed, he says. At the other extreme, there are the people who believe that nothing is beyond their control and take on every problem as their own. These people constantly worry about problems they can never solve—a self-destructive type of behavior characteristic of Type A’s that can lead to frustration and burnout. There are physical consequences, too. Extended periods of feeling helpless and gloomy can depress the immune system and increase our vulnerability to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, and cancer. Type A behavior has been linked to heart disease as well as high blood pressure and ulcers — anything related to the cardiovascular and gastric systems.

What’s the worst possible consequence to your problem? It’s probably not so bad. Just tell yourself, “I think I’ll go for a walk and worry about this next Thursday at 4:30 PM.” By the time Thursday rolls around, the problem will probably seem very minor, if it exists at all.

Depression, Lack of Mental Clarity, Lack of Brain Coordination and Thinking Processes Type Problems

Many forms of depression, lack of mental clarity, and brain coordination are due to a lack of oxygenation and circulation. These disappear when the brain is oxygenated and proper circulation is restored. Choose one or more of the following to oxygenate the head area and take 40 to 80 drops three times per day.

There are, essentially, two schools of thought regarding the causes of depression. The psychoanalysts and behaviorists believe that depression is caused by some kind of a traumatic loss in early life which manifests itself later in feelings of guilt, inadequacy, self pity, and anger. This initial loss is normally reinforced over the years by too much sympathy from family and friends. Then there is the orthomolecular, biological, psychiatric school of thought. The biological school maintains that depression often has a biochemical basis. It maintains that a biochemical systemic disorder, the excess or deficiency of certain chemicals, minerals, and/or trace elements in the brain is the primary cause of sever or clinical depression. Our rapidly changing lifestyles lead to uncertainty, confusion, and insecurity. Unhappy or broken marriages; disappointment in children (or parents); high-pressure jobs; open, loose, uncommitted relationships; personal tragedies such as serious illness or death of loved ones — all are important factors that can trigger a genetic defect, biochemical malfunction in the activity of the brain and central nervous system, or other biological cause of depression.

The Causes of Depression

The National Institute of Mental Health conducted a poll of hundreds of patients with severe clinical depression and found that the following factors, listed in the order of importance, are the top ten precipitators or triggers of depression:

  • Threat to sexual identity. Real or imagined threat to, or loss of, masculinity or femininity. For example, a woman’s discovery that she cannot bear children, or the feeling that she has no sex appeal; or a man’s discovery that he is impotent, or if he is rejected by women.
  • Breaks in close relationships. Example: divorce.
  • Instability, uncertainty, such as constant moving from one place to another, whether it is a local or long distance move.
  • Having a painful and repressed (secret) situation brought to the surface and being forced to face it.
  • Mild or serious physical illness.
  • Inability to do well at one’s job.
  • Children’s failure to meet their parents’ expectations (affects parents, not the children).
  • Change in load of responsibility at home or at work.
  • Shift in social status, either upward or downward.
  • Death of an important or close person.
Consider bumping up your intake of the B vitamins.
