Candidiasis is an infection caused by strains of the yeast, Candida, the most common being Candida albicans.Candida is normally present in the digestive tract and the vagina. During certain favorable conditions such as warm, humid weather or when an individual’s immune system is impaired, the yeast can infect the skin. Mucous membranes in the mouth and vagina are commonly infected. In rare instances, Candida can invade blood and deeper tissues, causing life-threatening infection.

What changed in our culture to bring on this problem?

1. The widespread and indiscriminate use of antibiotics (that are a fungus or a yeast) has become commonplace. Do not use antibiotics when they are not necessary.

2. The consumption of meat from animals which are routinely fed large amounts of antibiotics as a part of their feed. Perhaps purchasing organically-fed, hormone- and antibiotic-free animal products would be a positive investment in your good health.

3. The use of “tampon plugs” by women during the menstrual cycle. (The “plug” causes a suppression of flow and creates an environment which becomes a breeding ground for yeast and other problems.)

4. A “candida yeast” problem, once contracted, can be passed back and forth between sexual partners. It would be wise for the partner to also use the herbs to eliminate the yeast problem.

5. Increased bowel elimination problems have resulted since the milling of grains (removing of the bran/fiber which would sweep the bowel clean). This has been done to prolong shelf life. Problems have also increased because of the use of refined sweeteners (sugar and corn syrup) which have had the Vitamin B Complex removed in the refining process. These two factors are largely responsible for a lazy bowel. This lazy bowel gives “candida yeast” somewhere to harbor, which they normally would not have.

Candida albicans is a naturally-occurring yeast that flourishes in moist areas, such as the digestive tract, the vagina, and skin folds. Ordinarily, its population is kept in check by bacteria that live in the same areas. When normal bacteria are disturbed by antibiotics, however, yeast populations can grow to abnormally high levels. For women, the most common symptom of excess candida is a vaginal yeast infection, as marked by itchiness, redness, burning on urination, and a yeasty odor.

All those who are on long-term antibiotics or chemotherapy are at high risk for severe cases of candidiasis. Taking antibiotics also can cause a deficiency of vitamin K, which is manufactured by the “good bacteria” in the intestines. Eating plenty of leafy greens, alfalfa, strawberries, whole grains, and yogurt can restore the vitamin K balance.
